    I am back
I have not been on this for a while as I have been so cold I have not dared to get out from under the duvet. Fear not though, I have not been a lazy walrus, I have been concocting some exciting new recipes. Here is the first in a series. Enjoy.

    Sigh!
My pickled eggs have gone moldy. I may still eat them.

[info]scummoth says if I behave pleasantly in the next week I can go to offbeat on Friday. I will try to be good.

I only have 35p so I can't get anyone a Christmas present but people can have a hug and/or brush my mustache if they wish.

    Yule
I love the tasty treats the Christmas time brings, being an old fashioned sort I do all my own cooking. I have made my Christmas cake and buried it in the garden, hung my mince pies on the oak tree and put my eggs in treacle to pickle. What else do I need to do?

    Music
I have been listening to more music recently, I am especially enjoying Half Man Half Biscuit.

On a sadder note note Jacques and I are not getting on terribly well. I think America did no favours to his temperament.

    Grooming
Today was spent lazing around and grooming my mustache. Not an exciting task, but a necessary one for a walrus such as my self.

    Jacques
My brother Jacques has arrived form Colorado! He seems a little subdued which I am sure is because of his flight over in a box. He has grown much larger than I remember him, There must be good grub in Colorado. All I ever see him eat is lollipops, salad and of course saskatoons.

    Here we are... Pock!

    A Note about Legumes..
I know I must seem terribly obsessed with filling my own gut but I wish to make a few reflections about legumes. I believe the lima and Fava are the most succulent of all legumes and go stunningly with a crab paste. I have heard it is a favorite of MR. Billy Corgan.

However one must not live by legumes alone for it would be achingly dull.

    I feel rather upset today.

Today [info]scummoth brought home a fantastic book entitled Food For Free. A small synopsis follows; A guide to over 200 types of food that can be gathered in the wild in Britain, this book explores the history and folklore of the foods as well as explaining how we identify them and the best ways to cook and eat them.

Not only does it have information on such delicacies as Bullace, sand leek, rock tripe and bitter vetch, it has a wonderful piece about the mighty Medlar.

What did such a wondrous book cost I hear you cry... well the bargaintastic price of 50p I bellow back.

Lately I have been having some gastric problems, maybe it is all the bitter berries I chomp so freely.

    A note about fruits...
As many of you know I am a big fruit fan, the more exotic and mysterious the better. Some people may wish to know about two of my most recent favorite fruits, the quince and the medlar.

Betty Falk's seminal book The Beginners Cookery Book gives colorful descriptions of these fine fruits.

Quncies - Look a bit like golden pears. Some people like them stewed, but they have a rather floury texture. One, cut up with the apples, is good in a apple pie. They make quite a pleasant jam, and a superb jelly which you can eat with meat like redcurrant jelly, or on bread and butter.

Medlar - They look like tiny, leathery brown apples, with a crown of dried spiky sepals. You don't eat them until they are 'bletted', that is mushy (some people call it 'rotten'). A few connoisseurs dote on them; but most people find them rather horrid.

Well I must be Colin the connoisseur, because I find them toothsome. Alas, she does not give her opinion on the saskatoon.

    RIP Richard Whiteley.

    Gigantic
After waking up from my mid evening nap yesterday i felt a little uneasy. Shortly afterwards I was introduced to a massive walrus that [info]scummoth had rescued from a fair. He is a hulking, somber gent who seems content to sit and think his long thoughts. I think I shall leave him be just in case he turns though.

Unfortunately I have not got on Countdown, it is a shame but there is always Mastermind.

Here is a wonderful recipe site including many delicious saskatoon recipes. http://www.albertafruit.com/html/chef_s_corner.html. So tasty.

On a different note why do so many popular American sitcoms include screeching and screaming by the "audience"? It is rather trying on the ears.
